Their Story

Ryan Dennis-Orin Riley was a 22-year-old specialist in the U.S. Army from Richmond, Kentucky. He was assigned to Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Specialist Riley died in a non-combat incident at Qayyarah Airfield West, a strategic coalition base south of Mosul, Iraq, on April 20, 2019. The incident was under investigation at the time of the announcement.

Riley's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. In early 2019, the coalition had declared the territorial defeat of the ISIS caliphate, and the mission was shifting from major combat operations to a focus on training, advising, and stabilization efforts.

Following his death, the Army posthumously promoted Riley to the rank of specialist. He was returned to his home state, where he was buried in the Madison County Memorial Gardens in Richmond, Kentucky. His family and community held memorial services in his honor.

Riley is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Madison County Veterans Memorial in Kentucky.
