Their Story

Roger Pina Jr. was a 29-year-old sergeant from San Antonio, Texas. He served as a medic assigned to the Medical Company, 10th Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On June 14, 2006, Pina was killed in the town of Musa Qulah in Afghanistan's Helmand province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) during a convoy operation. He was one of two soldiers killed in the attack.

By 2006, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its fifth year. The Taliban had regrouped and intensified its insurgency, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand. The use of IEDs against coalition convoys and patrols had become a primary tactic, leading to increased casualties.

The Army posthumously awarded Pina the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children. His death was reported by local Texas media and military news outlets at the time.

Sergeant Pina is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and at the Fort Drum memorial. His role as a combat medic, tasked with saving lives, is noted in unit remembrances.
