U.S. Army Specialist Justin Lee O'donohoe, 27, of San Diego, California, was killed in action on May 5, 2006, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Justin Lee O'donohoe was a 27-year-old specialist in the United States Army. He served with Troop A, 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. He was from San Diego, California.
On May 5, 2006, O'donohoe was killed during combat operations in Kunar Province, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under enemy small arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2006, the conflict had entered a phase of intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile provinces along the border with Pakistan.
The Army announced his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and other service medals.
O'donohoe is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum and is listed on the website of the 10th Mountain Division, to which his brigade belonged. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in San Diego.
