Their Story

Ronald Leon Murray Jr. was a 23-year-old soldier from Bowie, Maryland. He served as a specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bliss, Texas.

According to a U.S. Department of Defense news release, Murray died on November 10, 2016, from a non-combat related incident at Camp Buehring, a staging base in northern Kuwait. The incident was under investigation by U.S. military authorities. No further details on the circumstances were publicly released.

Murray was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. The operation began in August 2014, with U.S. and coalition forces providing air support, training, and advisory assistance to local ground forces. Camp Buehring served as a key logistics and transit hub for personnel and equipment moving into Iraq.

Following his death, Murray's remains were returned to the United States. The Army posthumously awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal. His funeral was held at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Maryland.
