Their Story
Raymond John Munden was a 35-year-old native of Mesquite, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Munden died on February 16, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E in Paktika province, Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. The base, located near the border with Pakistan, was a frequent target of insurgent rocket and mortar attacks.
Munden's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2009, the conflict had entered a period of intensified fighting as U.S. troop levels increased.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Campbell.
Sgt. 1st Class Munden is memorialized on the 506th Infantry Regiment's unit casualty list and on the Fort Campbell memorial wall. His name is also inscribed on the Mesquite Veterans Memorial in Texas.
