Monti, Jared Christopher
U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Jared Christopher Monti, 30, of Raynham, Massachusetts, was killed by enemy fire on June 22, 2006, in Gowardesh, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jared Christopher Monti was born on September 20, 1975, in Abington, Massachusetts, and grew up in Raynham. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1993. Monti served with the 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York, and was assigned to Troop C, 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment. His service included deployments to the Horn of Africa, the Philippines, and, in 2005, to Afghanistan.
On June 21, 2006, Monti was part of a 16-man patrol conducting surveillance in the mountainous Gowardesh region of Nuristan Province. The patrol was discovered and engaged by a large enemy force. During the ensuing firefight, a wounded soldier, Private Brian J. Bradbury, was left exposed on an open ridge. According to official accounts, Monti made three attempts to reach Bradbury under heavy rocket-propelled grenade, machine gun, and small arms fire. He was killed by an RPG blast during his third attempt.
Monti was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2006, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other anti-government forces, particularly in the country's eastern and southern provinces. The remote and rugged terrain of Nuristan was a known insurgent stronghold.
Monti was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. In September 2009, President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award for valor, to Monti's parents at a White House ceremony. The citation detailed his repeated attempts to rescue his fellow soldier.
Monti is buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial in his hometown of Raynham. The U.S. Army named a forward operating base in Afghanistan, FOB Monti, in his honor.
