U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Robert Joseph Mogensen, 26, of Pinebluff, North Carolina, was killed in a vehicle accident and subsequent enemy attack on May 29, 2004, in Qalat, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Robert Joseph Mogensen was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Pinebluff, North Carolina, he was 26 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 29, 2004, Mogensen was part of a convoy traveling near the city of Qalat in Zabul province. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle rolled over into a ravine. While soldiers were responding to that accident, their position came under enemy small-arms fire. Mogensen was killed during this hostile engagement.
Mogensen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In mid-2004, operations in provinces like Zabul involved counter-insurgency missions against Taliban and Al-Qaeda remnants. The period saw frequent attacks on coalition forces using ambushes and improvised explosive devices.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death on May 30, 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, North Carolina.
Sergeant First Class Mogensen is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Bragg and is listed on the 3rd Special Forces Group memorial. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
