Their Story

Brian Michael Mescall was a 33-year-old U.S. Army major from Hopkinton, Massachusetts. He served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, a unit based in Hohenfels, Germany, and had deployed to multiple locations including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.

On January 9, 2009, Major Mescall was killed by enemy fire at Forward Operating Base Lagman in Zabul province, southern Afghanistan. According to military reports, the base came under a coordinated attack involving small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2009, the conflict was in a period of intensified fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions.

Major Mescall was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown of Hopkinton, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Massachusetts State House and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
