Staff Sergeant Daniel Dewayne Merriweather was a 25-year-old soldier from Collierville, Tennessee. He served with the 118th Military Police Company, 503rd Military Police Battalion, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as part of the U.S. Army's contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 13, 2010, Merriweather died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Logar province, Afghanistan. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led international military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
Merriweather's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Tennessee State Capitol and is listed on the online memorial of the 503rd Military Police Battalion. He is remembered by his unit and community.
