Lance Cpl. Jacob Alexander Meinert, 20, of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine killed in a hostile incident in Bastion, Afghanistan, on January 10, 2010.
Their Story
Jacob Alexander Meinert was a 20-year-old from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.
On January 10, 2010, Lance Cpl. Meinert was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to Marine Corps statements, he died from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations in the vicinity of Camp Bastion, a major British air base. The Department of Defense listed his death as a result of hostile action.
Meinert was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in Helmand province, including the area around Marjah.
His death was reported by local and national news outlets in Wisconsin. The Marine Corps confirmed his death, and his body was returned to his hometown. A memorial service was held at Fort Atkinson High School, where he had graduated in 2007.
Lance Cpl. Meinert was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his community and by veterans' organizations. His name is inscribed on the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines memorial in Hawaii and is included on casualty lists from the war.
