Their Story

Curtis Robert Mehrer was a 21-year-old soldier from Bismarck, North Dakota. He served with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, part of the North Dakota Army National Guard's Task Force Vigilant based in Grand Forks.

On June 6, 2006, Corporal Mehrer was killed in Khogyani district, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, but the area was known for insurgent activity.

Mehrer's death occurred during a period of Operation Enduring Freedom marked by a resurgence of Taliban forces. By 2006, insurgent tactics, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks, were increasing across Afghanistan, particularly in eastern provinces like Nangarhar.

His death was reported by regional and national news outlets. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military announcements. A memorial service was held in his home state.

Corporal Mehrer is remembered on memorials in North Dakota and nationally at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. His unit, the 188th Air Defense Artillery, continued its deployment as part of the broader U.S. and NATO mission in Afghanistan.
