Their Story
Jeremy Ryan McQueary was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On February 18, 2010, Sgt. McQueary was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death was the result of hostile action. He was 27 years old.
McQueary's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in Taliban strongholds within Helmand province, including the Marjah district.
