Allen Robert Mckenna Jr. was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company D, 204th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. A native of Noble, Oklahoma, he was 28 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Mckenna died on February 21, 2012, in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed his death as a result of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire. He was one of two U.S. service members killed in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan that day.
Mckenna's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2012, Kandahar province remained a major center of insurgent activity and a focus of coalition military operations.
His death was reported by multiple news agencies, including The Oklahoman, which noted his hometown. He was survived by his wife and children. His name is recorded on the Defense Casualty Analysis System and inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson.
Staff Sergeant Mckenna was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His unit, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, completed its deployment and returned to Fort Carson later in 2012.
