Their Story
Michael Martin McGreevy Jr. was a U.S. Navy SEAL officer assigned to SEAL Team Ten, based in Norfolk, Virginia. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was 30 years old at the time of his death.
On June 28, 2005, Lieutenant McGreevy was part of a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team operating in the mountainous terrain near Asadabad, Afghanistan, in Kunar Province. The team was engaged in a firefight with anti-coalition militia forces. McGreevy and two other SEALs were killed in the action. A quick-reaction force helicopter sent to extract them was shot down, resulting in the deaths of all 16 personnel aboard.
This incident, known as the "Battle of Abbas Ghar," occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation's primary objectives were to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime from power.
The loss of 19 special operations personnel in a single day was one of the deadliest for U.S. forces in Afghanistan up to that point. The event was widely reported and prompted official statements from the Department of Defense confirming the casualties.
McGreevy was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the National Navy SEAL Museum's Memorial Wall and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center.
