On July 6, 2007, Sergeant Mcgee was killed by hostile action in Wazi Khwa, a village in the mountainous Orgun-e district of Afghanistan's Paktika province. The Department of Defense stated his unit was conducting combat operations when he died.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2007, violence was escalating across the country, with insurgent forces employing improvised explosive devices and direct attacks against coalition and Afghan forces.
