Philip Daine Mcgeath was a 25-year-old Marine from Glendale, Arizona. He served with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 6, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

Corporal Mcgeath died on January 18, 2012, in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile fire. No further specifics regarding the exact nature of the engagement were publicly released.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
