Their Story

Airman First Class Nathaniel Henry McDavitt was a 22-year-old airman from Glen Burnie, Maryland. He served with the 52d Equipment Maintenance Squadron, based at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, as part of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). His unit provided critical maintenance support for aircraft involved in operations across the continent and the Middle East.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, McDavitt was killed in action on April 15, 2016, in Amman, Jordan. The official release stated his death was the result of a non-combat related injury. He was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve from a forward-deployed location in Jordan at the time of his death.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It was formally launched on August 8, 2014, following the group's rapid territorial gains. The operation involved a coalition of nations conducting airstrikes and providing training and advisory support to local ground forces.

The Air Force announced McDavitt's death in a press release on April 18, 2016. His death was reported by several major news outlets, including The Washington Post, which noted he was the second U.S. service member to die in Jordan in support of the anti-ISIS campaign that year. The circumstances of the non-combat injury were not detailed in public releases.

McDavitt was posthumously promoted to the rank of Senior Airman. He is memorialized on the Air Force Memorial's Honor Roll and at other military remembrance sites. His home state of Maryland recognized his service in official statements following his death.
