Staff Sergeant Mecolus Chevette McDaniel was a 33-year-old soldier from Fort Hood, Texas. He served with Troop A, 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky. The unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On March 19, 2011, McDaniel died in Shamul District, Khowst Province, in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol, according to contemporaneous news reports.
His death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations, with a significant troop surge from 2009 to 2011 aimed at stabilizing the country.
McDaniel's death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
McDaniel is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Hood and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, continued its deployment following his death.
