U.S. Army Captain Joshua Michael McClimans, 30, of Jamestown, Ohio, was killed by hostile fire on April 22, 2011, at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Joshua Michael McClimans was a 30-year-old U.S. Army captain from Jamestown, Ohio. He served as a medical service corps officer with the 848th Forward Surgical Team, part of the 256th Combat Support Hospital, which was based in Twinsburg, Ohio. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On April 22, 2011, McClimans was killed at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile fire. Reports from the time indicate the base came under indirect fire, which includes rocket or mortar attacks.
McClimans died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of heightened U.S. troop presence known as the surge, which aimed to reverse Taliban momentum. Khost Province, bordering Pakistan, was a significant area of insurgent activity.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded McClimans the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and parents. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Jamestown, Ohio.
Captain McClimans is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Twinsburg, Ohio, which honors members of the 256th Combat Support Hospital who died in service. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
