Pfc. Daniel Bradley McClenney, 19, of Shelbyville, Tennessee, was a U.S. Marine killed in Bari Khout, Afghanistan, on June 24, 2004.

Their Story

Daniel Bradley McClenney was a 19-year-old from Shelbyville, Tennessee. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a Private First Class to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On June 24, 2004, McClenney was killed during combat operations in Bari Khout, a village in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province. According to Marine Corps statements, he died from hostile fire while his unit was engaged with enemy forces.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2004, U.S. and coalition forces were conducting counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters in the country's southern and eastern regions.

Following his death, the Department of Defense issued a casualty release. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Local media in Tennessee reported on his death and his family's loss.

McClenney is memorialized on the Shelbyville Veterans Memorial in his hometown. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
