Their Story
John Joel Malone was a 24-year-old from Yonkers, New York. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward). His unit was based out of Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
On September 24, 2009, Malone was killed in Delaram, located in Afghanistan's Farah Province. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released in public reports.
Malone's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
