James Michael Malachowski was a 25-year-old Staff Sergeant from Westminster, Maryland, serving with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Malachowski died on March 20, 2011, in Helmand province. The official cause was listed as hostile action.
