Their Story

Michael Christopher Mahr was a 26-year-old soldier from Homosassa, Florida. He served as a Private First Class with the 541st Engineer Company (Sapper), part of the 54th Engineer Battalion based in Bamberg, Germany.

On March 22, 2011, Mahr was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Bandoka, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was conducting a dismounted patrol when the unit came under attack.

Mahr's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Kandahar.

His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in Florida, where he was remembered by family and fellow soldiers from his unit.

Mahr's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Homosassa. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense.
