Maholic, Thomas Donald
Master Sergeant Thomas Donald Maholic, 38, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He was killed in a firefight in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on June 24, 2006.
Their Story
Master Sergeant Thomas Donald Maholic was a senior non-commissioned officer assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Bradford, Pennsylvania, he was 38 years old at the time of his death.
On June 24, 2006, Maholic was leading a small team of U.S. and Afghan soldiers on a patrol in the Panjwayi district, west of Kandahar city. According to U.S. military reports, the unit was ambushed by insurgents. A firefight ensued, during which Maholic was fatally wounded. Another U.S. soldier, Staff Sergeant Christopher N. Piper, was killed in the same engagement.
Maholic's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2006, NATO forces assumed command of security operations in southern Afghanistan, including Kandahar province, where insurgent activity was intensifying. The Panjwayi district was a known insurgent stronghold.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced the deaths of Maholic and Piper on June 26, 2006. Maholic was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device and the Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children.
Master Sergeant Maholic's name is inscribed on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Bradford County Courthouse in his home state of Pennsylvania.
