Their Story
Bryant Jordan Luxmore was a 25-year-old soldier from the small rural community of New Windsor, Illinois. He served as a corporal with Company B, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service had also taken him to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On June 10, 2012, Corporal Luxmore was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol in the Dand district of Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The patrol was part of a larger security operation in the volatile region. The Department of Defense officially announced his death two days later.
Luxmore's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a focus on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces in areas like Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.
His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held at the New Windsor Presbyterian Church. He was buried with military honors in the New Windsor Cemetery. The Rock Island Arsenal garrison commander presented the U.S. flag to his family.
Corporal Luxmore was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and at Fort Stewart. His death was one of 2,356 American service member fatalities recorded during Operation Enduring Freedom.
