Their Story
Jonathon Luke Luscher was a 20-year-old from Scranton, Pennsylvania, who served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, part of the 55th Brigade Combat Team of the 28th Infantry Division, based in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
On August 17, 2008, Specialist Luscher was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on guard duty at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam in Laghman Province, eastern Afghanistan. According to military reports, the base came under attack from insurgent forces.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was in a phase characterized by a resurgent Taliban insurgency and intensified combat operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
Following his death, the Pennsylvania National Guard and his community in Scranton held memorial services. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.
Specialist Luscher is remembered on memorials for fallen soldiers from Pennsylvania and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls. His name is among the 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
