Second Lieutenant Scott Blanchard Lundell, 35, of West Valley City, Utah, was killed by hostile fire on November 25, 2006, in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Scott Blanchard Lundell was a 35-year-old second lieutenant serving with the Utah Army National Guard. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Field Artillery, based in Riverton, Utah, and deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
On November 25, 2006, Lundell was killed in Tarin Kowt, the capital of Uruzgan province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by enemy small-arms fire during a patrol. Another soldier, Specialist Derek T. Calhoun, 23, was killed in the same incident.
Lundell died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2006, ISAF forces were engaged in significant combat operations in southern provinces like Uruzgan against a resurgent Taliban.
Lundell was posthumously promoted from first lieutenant to the rank of captain. He was survived by his wife and two children. His funeral was held at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City.
He is memorialized on the Utah Fallen Warrior Memorial and the National Guard Memorial in Washington, D.C. His name is inscribed on Panel 12E, Line 125 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Utah State Capitol.
