Lumley, Ryan Michael
U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Michael Lumley, 21, of Lakeland, Florida, was killed in hostile action on December 3, 2011, in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Ryan Michael Lumley was a 21-year-old soldier from Lakeland, Florida. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Bliss, Texas. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as part of the U.S. military's Operation Enduring Freedom.
On December 3, 2011, Specialist Lumley was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the village of Haft Asiab, located in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar province. The area was a known insurgent stronghold and the site of frequent engagements between coalition forces and Taliban fighters.
Lumley's death occurred during the final, intense years of the U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan, a strategy aimed at degrading insurgent capabilities before a planned transition to Afghan-led security. The Panjwa'i district, part of Kandahar's volatile agricultural belt, saw some of the war's heaviest fighting during this period.
The Department of Defense announced Lumley's death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Army Good Conduct Medal.
Ryan Lumley is remembered by his family and community in Lakeland. He was laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Park in his hometown.
