Their Story

Joshua Akoni Lukeala was a 23-year-old soldier from the village of Yigo on the U.S. territory of Guam. He served as a sergeant in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On June 7, 2010, Sergeant Lukeala was killed by enemy small-arms fire while his unit was engaged in combat operations at Combat Outpost 7 in the Dangam Ashmar area of eastern Afghanistan's Konar province. The outpost, situated in a volatile district near the Pakistani border, was a focal point for counterinsurgency efforts.

Lukeala's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In mid-2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and intense fighting in eastern provinces like Konar, where U.S. and Afghan forces contested insurgent strongholds.

According to military releases, Lukeala was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His death was reported by several news outlets covering casualties from the 101st Airborne Division.

Sergeant Lukeala is memorialized on Guam and at Fort Campbell. His name is inscribed on the Guam Veterans Memorial and is included in the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell.
