Their Story

Martin Anthony Lugo was a 24-year-old sergeant from Tucson, Arizona, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a specialized light infantry unit.

On August 19, 2010, Lugo was killed during a combat operation in the Puli Alam district of Afghanistan's Logar province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death resulted from a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.

Lugo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and intense counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Logar, which is located south of Kabul.

The Army announced his death in a press release several days later. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. Lugo was survived by his parents and siblings.
