Their Story

Leon Horace Lucas Jr. was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. A native of Wilson, North Carolina, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division, based out of Twentynine Palms, California. His service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

According to the Department of Defense, Lucas died on August 1, 2011, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile action. No further specific details of the incident were publicly released.

Lucas was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused in southern provinces like Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.

The Marine Corps announced his death in a press release on August 3, 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to North Carolina, where he was buried with military honors.

Staff Sergeant Lucas is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Wilson County Veterans Memorial and on online veterans' remembrance pages. He is survived by his family in Wilson.
