Their Story

Jeffrey Alan Lucas was a 33-year-old Petty Officer 1st Class in the United States Navy, serving with the elite SEAL Team Ten based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was from the town of Corbett, Oregon.

On June 28, 2005, Lucas was killed during a combat mission in the mountainous Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan, near the city of Asadabad. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a mission to interdict anti-coalition militia forces when it came under fire. Lucas was one of four SEALs killed in the engagement, which also resulted in the loss of eight U.S. Army special operations soldiers when their MH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down during a rescue attempt.

Lucas died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2005, the conflict had entered a phase of intense counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern provinces, where Taliban and other militant groups had regrouped and were mounting a significant resistance.

Lucas was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. His death, along with the others lost in the same operation, was widely reported and marked one of the single deadliest days for U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan up to that point.

He is memorialized on the Navy SEAL Memorial at the Museum of the Albemarle in North Carolina and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Oregon State Capitol. His name is listed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in his home state of Oregon.
