Corporal Conner Thomas Lowry, 24, of Chicago, Illinois, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on March 1, 2012, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Corporal Conner Thomas Lowry was born in Chicago, Illinois. He served as an active-duty Marine with Battery G, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
On March 1, 2012, Lowry was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. His unit was operating in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan.
Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved U.S. and allied forces fighting Taliban insurgents and Al-Qaeda. By 2012, the war was in its eleventh year, with intense fighting concentrated in provinces like Helmand and Kandahar.
Lowry's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Chicago media. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. His body was returned to Illinois, where he was buried with military honors.
In Chicago, a street in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood was renamed 'Honorary CPL Conner T. Lowry Street' in his memory. He is remembered by his family, fellow Marines, and his community as a dedicated serviceman.
