Lowell, Jacob Michael

Jacob Michael Lowell was a 22-year-old from New Lenox, Illinois, a suburb southwest of Chicago. He served as an active-duty soldier in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based at Camp Ederle, Italy.

On June 2, 2007, Specialist Lowell was killed during a combat operation in the Gowardesh area of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was one of two soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade killed in separate incidents in eastern Afghanistan that day.

Lowell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2007, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the mountainous eastern provinces along the Pakistan border, where Taliban and other insurgent forces were active.

His body was returned to Illinois, and he was buried with military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Local news reports from the time noted his death was mourned by his family and community, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Specialist Lowell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and at the national cemetery. His name is among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
