Jamie Russel Lowe, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine corporal from Johnsonville, Illinois, died in a hostile incident in Nowzad, Afghanistan, on January 11, 2010.
Their Story
Jamie Russel Lowe was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, which was part of Regimental Combat Team 7, Marine Expeditionary Brigade – Forward, based out of Okinawa, Japan. He was from Johnsonville, Illinois.
On January 11, 2010, Corporal Lowe was killed in Nowzad, a district in Afghanistan's Helmand province. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while supporting combat operations.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, President Barack Obama ordered a surge of 30,000 additional U.S. troops into the country, with a focus on securing population centers in the south, including Helmand province.
The Marine Corps confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on Panel 7W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Ontario, California.
Corporal Lowe is remembered by his unit and community. A memorial service was held for him at Camp Hansen in Okinawa.
