Zachary George Lovejoy was a 20-year-old from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He served as a Private First Class with Company C, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On February 2, 2010, Lovejoy was killed in the vicinity of Forward Operating Base Sweeny in Zabul province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Official reports did not specify the exact nature of the attack, but the area was known for insurgent activity, including improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire.
Lovejoy's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
