Their Story
Kristofferson Bernardo Lorenzo grew up in Camarillo, California. He served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
On May 23, 2011, Staff Sgt. Lorenzo was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Nari District of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. He was 33 years old. The Department of Defense stated his unit was conducting a security operation when it came under fire.
Lorenzo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission evolved from counter-terrorism to counterinsurgency and training Afghan forces.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local media in his home state of California. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
Staff Sgt. Lorenzo is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ventura County Government Center and is listed on the 3rd Brigade Combat Team's 'Fallen Warriors' memorial in Hawaii. His name appears on Panel 27E, Line 11 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
