Joseph Charles Lopez was a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California. According to the Department of Defense, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On October 14, 2010, Lopez was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while conducting combat operations. He was 26 years old.
