Lance Cpl. Juan Lopez-Castaneda, 19, of Mesa, Arizona, was a U.S. Marine killed in Sangin, Afghanistan, on August 14, 2008, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Juan Lopez-Castaneda was a 19-year-old from Mesa, Arizona, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Lance Corporal with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of Twentynine Palms, California.
On August 14, 2008, Lopez-Castaneda was killed by hostile action in the Sangin District of Afghanistan's Helmand Province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while supporting combat operations. Specific details of the incident were not publicly released.
By 2008, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its seventh year. The Sangin District was a focal point of intense fighting, known for a high concentration of Taliban insurgents and improvised explosive devices.
