Angel Luis Lopez was a 27-year-old soldier from Parma, Ohio. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky.
According to the Department of Defense, Lopez died on October 5, 2013, at Forward Operating Base Apache in Afghanistan's Zabul province. The Pentagon listed his death as the result of a hostile incident, reportedly from indirect fire, such as a rocket or mortar attack, targeting the base.
Lopez was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred as the U.S. was drawing down forces following a surge, but insurgent attacks on coalition bases remained a persistent threat, particularly in provinces like Zabul.
