Their Story

Youvert Loney was from the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was 28 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.

On September 5, 2009, Sgt. Loney was killed in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. The specific details of the engagement were not publicly released, but the area was known for insurgent activity and complex terrain.

Loney's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
