Joseph Daniel Logan, a 22-year-old U.S. Marine Corporal from Willis, Texas, was killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on January 19, 2012.

Their Story

Corporal Joseph Daniel Logan was a Marine assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 (HMH-363), Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. His unit was based at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Before deploying to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included operations in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On January 19, 2012, Corporal Logan died in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced he was killed while conducting combat operations. No further specifics regarding the incident were released in initial reports.

Logan's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant concentration of U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency efforts in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar province.

Following his death, the Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded his loss. His body was returned to the United States. Local news in Texas reported on memorials held in his hometown of Willis, noting his family's grief and his status as a local casualty of the war.

Corporal Logan's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on other local memorials in Texas. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
