Corporal Daniel Lee II Linnabary was a Marine assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was from the small community of Hubert, North Carolina.
On August 6, 2012, Linnabary was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Defense Department, he died from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. Official reports list the cause as hostile.
Linnabary's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with intense counterinsurgency efforts focused on provinces like Helmand.
