Their Story
Daniel Lim was a 23-year-old sergeant from Cypress, California, serving with Battery C, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 17th Fires Brigade based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 24, 2010, Sergeant Lim was killed in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by the military.
Lim's death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a major U.S. troop surge. In 2010, Zabul province was a known transit and operational area for Taliban insurgents, and U.S. and allied forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations there. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and on online veterans' memorials. His name appears on the 'Faces of the Fallen' database maintained by The Washington Post, documenting U.S. service members killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
