Their Story
Joseph Michael Lilly was a 25-year-old sergeant from Flint, Michigan, serving with the 18th Engineer Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
On June 14, 2012, Sergeant Lilly died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol. He was one of two soldiers from his brigade killed in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan that day.
Lilly's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the war was in its eleventh year, with Kandahar province remaining a major area of insurgent activity and a focus for U.S. and allied forces.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Lilly the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His funeral was held in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.
Sergeant Lilly was remembered by his unit as a dedicated combat engineer. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and on Panel 31W, Line 34 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Springfield, Virginia.
