Their Story
Nathan Edward Lillard was a 26-year-old soldier from Knoxville, Tennessee. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On November 14, 2010, Lillard was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in Watapur District, a rugged and contested area of eastern Afghanistan's Konar province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Lillard's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Konar along the border with Pakistan.
His body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell.
Lillard is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Campbell and in his hometown. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, honoring alumni who died in the conflict.
