He served as a Specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit had been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
