Their Story

Roy Persimmon Lewsader Jr. was a 36-year-old Staff Sergeant from Clinton, Indiana. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army, assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (Transition Team) based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

On June 16, 2007, Lewsader was killed in Tarin Kowt, the capital of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile action. According to contemporaneous reporting, his death occurred during a firefight with Taliban insurgents while he was part of a team training Afghan police forces.

Lewsader's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in a significant counterinsurgency effort, with a focus on training Afghan national security forces and confronting a resurgent Taliban.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several national and regional news outlets, including the Indianapolis Star. He was survived by his wife and children.
