Their Story
Joseph Michael Lewis was a 26-year-old specialist from Terrell, Texas. He served with Troop A, 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
On November 17, 2009, Specialist Lewis was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle in Ezqabad, a village in the volatile Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. The attack occurred during a mounted patrol.
Lewis died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations, with IEDs representing the leading cause of casualties for coalition forces.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.
Specialist Lewis is remembered on memorials in his hometown and is listed among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during the Afghanistan war. His unit, the 5th Stryker Brigade, completed its deployment in mid-2010.
