Lance Corporal Harry Lew, 21, of Santa Clara, California, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on April 3, 2011.
Their Story
Harry Lew was a 21-year-old Marine from Santa Clara, California. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, part of the 3rd Marine Division based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 1.
Lew was killed on April 3, 2011, during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while engaging enemy forces.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010 and 2011, U.S. forces, including Marines in Helmand, were engaged in a surge of operations aimed at clearing insurgent strongholds.
Following his death, Lew was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. He was buried with military honors. His family and community in Santa Clara held memorial services.
Harry Lew is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Santa Clara Civic Center. His name is among the 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
